The struggle to cut-through
Bri Williams
As I see it, there are three big problems in the modern communications environment.
I call them the 3Vs:
1. Volume: The sheer amount of information people are bombarded with.
2. Velocity: The speed at which information is created and changes.
3. Veracity: The reliability of what is shared.
To cope, people are relying more than ever on short-cuts β cognitive biases and heuristics.
Thereβs a lot you could do to communicate more effectively in this environment.
(Which is why Iβm so often invited to run workshops on behavioural science with comms teams. Reply to this email if you want to find out more.)
But as a starting point, you wonβt go far wrong by asking:
-
What is this about?
-
Why is it important to them right now?
-
Who needs to do what?
-
How do they do it?
-
When does it need to happen?
Answer those clearly, and you have the foundations of a message that cuts through.
