Write as a reader
Bri Williams
We hate receiving long, meandering emails.
Yet weβre the ones writing them.
Because we forget that how we write and how we read are different.
When we write, our POV is front of mind.
We know the end point, so we build towards it.
We want to explain our position, so we carry the reader along.
When we read, we do the opposite.
We jump straight to the point.
We scan first, and only go back if we need more context.
If you want your emails to cut through, start writing as a reader.
-
Start with the answer.
-
Then add the context.
-
Then (only if needed) the detail.
