Raygun's Streisand Effect
Bri Williams
The lawsuit was the best promotion.
Comedian Steph Broadbridge had to cancel her show ‘Raygun: The Musical’ after Raygun, Australia’s premier female Olympic breakdancer, threatened to sue her.
Now her show, retitled ‘Breaking: The Musical’, is back, legally vetted and a sold out.
This is the latest example of “The Streisand Effect”, so called after Barbra Streisand inadvertently brought more attention to a picture of her home when she sued to have it removed from a photographer’s website.
As soon as people are told not to look at something, guess what happens!
Clearly, making a fuss can sometimes make a situation worse.
There are some things worth standing up for, but before you do, factor unwanted attention into your calculations.
P.S. I talk through another example of the Streisand Effect, this time affecting Australia's wealthiest woman Gina Rinehart, on my blog.
