If you’ve ever watched a house being built, you’ll know it takes about a week to demolish the old and many months to create the new.
So it is at work.
It’s much easier to tear something apart – to criticise – than it is to create.
Critique feels clever. It feels constructive. So we feel validated when we do it.
But when your work is what’s being ripped to shreds, it can feel personal and deflating.
And next time, you quietly think: I’m not going to bother.
Good leaders remember that creation is fragile.
Instead of defaulting to demolition, they ask: “What can we build on?”
Because real progress doesn’t come from showing how easily you can pull something apart, it comes from helping shape what gets built next.
