Easier to ask how
Bri Williams
It’s easier to ask “how” rather than “why” questions at work, have you noticed?
Asking “why” can feel like you’re challenging intent, whereas asking “how” feels constructive and supportive.
But skipping “why” can make us assume we’re on the same page – that we share the rationale and intent – when we might not.
To avoid defensiveness and get at the “why”, try masking it as a “how”.
- For example: “How are you approaching this?” or “How did you decide on this method?”
A small shift in wording can reveal intent without triggering defensiveness, and open up a discussion about why this really matters.
