Leadership is about YOU, not them
Bri Williams
An email from research company Gallup has me wondering.
“Gallup's global data shows that 70% of a team's engagement is determined by one person: the manager. But here's the problem: Most managers have never been trained to manage. They are promoted for performance, not leadership. And now, they are breaking under the pressure of employee expectations and executive demands.”
What caught my attention was the claim that “Most managers have never been trained to manage”.
It’s not that I don’t believe that to be true, but I’m gobsmacked that it can STILL be true. I was on management courses throughout the 2000’s and exactly the same claim was being made: Managers aren’t being properly trained to lead.
Despite the leadership training industry being valued globally at more than $565 billion (Australia $2.2 billion), there seems to be a pervasive and persistent problem when it comes to the training that’s delivered.
It’s not real.
Unless the training helps change the habits of the learners, it will remain theoretical.
Goodness knows, in my early days I fell into this trap when delivering training. I focussed on content rather than building their habit to USE the content. That’s the key.
👉 Because to get those you are leading to behave differently, YOU need to behave differently first.
