I almost cheated

Shamefully, I was once tempted to cheat on an exam.
It was my least favourite subject β maths β and we had to remember dozens of formulae.
So, I etched them into my wooden ruler.
But in doing so, something unexpected happened.
I also etched them into my brain.
The act of carving the formulae made them stick, not because I intended to memorise them, but because the process forced me to encode the information.
Because when we interact with information in a meaningful way, weβre far more likely to remember it.
Itβs why:

rewriting notes works better than rereading them,
-
teaching someone else improves your own understanding,
-
and why cheating by engraving a formula can end up teaching you the formula.
If you want something to be memorable β in your work, your content, or your communication β donβt just present information.
Design moments of effort that make people interact with it.
